How to Love Someone Who (For the Moment) Thinks That You’re The Devil

Since it's the holiday season, I think it's only right that I share a story about keeping love alive in a tense time. Because let's be honest -- if you're human, you're probably going to experience at least one moment of stress when it comes to spending time with your loved ones this year. Someone is going to do something or say something that will drive you a little crazy. (Or a lot.) When this happens, how will you respond? Will the difficult experience serve as a gift disguised as a dilemma, actually bringing you closer? Keep these questions in...

10 Life Lessons You Can Learn at L’Arche

As I was trying to decide which of my L'Arche friends to focus on for today's post, I realized:  I didn't want to choose just one. Instead, I wanted to bring you the words of wisdom that each of them has shared with me over the years. And, while I don't want to give the impression that L'Arche is a field of daisies wherein the members spout words of wisdom at every turn...I have been blessed to learn from some very wise individuals. Some of the wisest people I know. Don't let the balloon hats fool you. So,...

My Life, Supported: On Setting Goals, Asking For Help + Breaking New Ground

Good morning! First, a reminder that, if you're thinking about signing on for Your Life, Supported!, now is the time to send me an email (caroline AT awishcomeclear.com). Rates go up for sessions booked after July 1... ...which is next Friday. (Unbelievable, isn't it?) Now's your chance. In honor of the aforementioned changeover, I rewrote my support plan + tracking tool this week. In doing so, I made a fascinating discovery:  I'm in a different place now than I was just 2 months ago. 2 months ago, my support plan included goals for every area of my life. At the...

On Launching An Ebook (And Reliving Dance Class)

I went for a run on Saturday night, to clear my head. On the whole, I'd spent a satisfying day... shipping a thank-you gift to my best friend and virtuoso (ebook + interior) designer Tammy drafting the chapter outline and first few pages of my next ebook (!) doing 2 hours, 22 minutes of line edits for "Your Creed Of Care" with Tammy, via Skype eating tacos with my husband. All this should have added up to a sense of accomplishment (except, perhaps, for the tacos.) "Your Creed Of Care" was (is) moving along right on schedule. It looks amazing,...

10 Life Lessons From 1 Wonderful Mom

Welcome to the Special Sunday Edition of A Wish Come Clear! In honor of Mother's Day (and in lieu of my usual Monday post), I'd like to share with you 10 things my Mom taught me, through her words and her actions. Each line includes a link to a post that's moved me this week. 10 Life Lessons From 1 Wonderful Mom: 1. Wherever you're going, take snacks. (In other words, feed yourself.) 2. Give freely, and go beyond what's expected. 3. Always bring a gift if you'll be staying at someone else's house. Corollary:  Don't arrive empty-handed to a...

Trapped By A Problem? How Active Receptivity Can Set You Free

When you want to solve an intractable problem, you probably do what I do:  dwell, ruminate and obsess. Yet I've noticed that when I'm frantically seeking a solution to a difficulty, I rarely receive one. Yet this does not translate to:  "Since I don't know what to do about my [job search/medical condition/insane schedule], I'm going to do nothing." Giving up gets you nowhere. But if madly scrambling for a solution isn't helpful....and giving up won't do...what's left? There's a middle way between striving and passivity. It's called active receptivity. It means that you work toward a solution while opening...

On Taking Initiative Today (Because Baby, You Were Born This Way)

Last week's post on thinking small got me thinking about the flip side of things. Initiative. Thinking big and acting big. This doesn't have to mean acting dramatic. It means acting outside your comfort zone. It means having what my friends and I call 'brave days'. Thinking big and acting big simply means putting yourself out there. It means that you... 1. State Your Desires In yoga, there's a wonderful tradition of setting an intention as you begin your practice (or begin your day.) Your intention could be anything:  to have fun, to challenge yourself, to breathe deeply. The power...

Real Life Minimalists ~ Guest Post At Miss Minimalist

Readers, today’s post is over at Miss Minimalist. It's the latest post in Francine Jay's "Real-Life Minimalists" series. You can find it here:  Real Life Minimalists:  Caroline Garnet McGraw. My post focuses on my experiences with simplicity within the...
