Every time I start feeling stuck and unsure, I remember a woman I’ve never met.

Her name was Te-lah-nay, a Native American woman displaced during the Trail of Tears. She was forced to march from her home in Alabama all the way to Oklahoma. 500 miles, minimum.

Te-lah-nay’s Journey

Think about that for a second. Think about what it must have been like for her, forced to leave home and walk hundreds of miles in a direction that she never wanted to go … all because of someone else’s greedy, unjust agenda.

If anyone had an excuse for feeling stuck and victimized, it was Te-lah-nay. But that’s not what she did. Instead, what she did was … walk back.

That’s right. She walked all the way BACK from Oklahoma to Alabama. I get choked up whenever I think about it.

The reason I know about her is that there is a truly amazing monument to her near where I live now. (I’m taking my private coaching clients there on our retreat this spring.)

A Sacred Place

Caroline

Tom Hendrix, Te-lah-nay’s great-great grandson, single-handedly built a massive stone wall on his property in her honor. It’s called the Wichahpi Commemorative Stone Wall, and it’s a sacred place.

There is a carefully-placed stone in the wall for every single step that Te-lah-nay took on her journey homeward. Her great-great-grandson spent 25 years stacking 8 million pounds of rock to honor her.

If that’s not PURPOSEFUL, I don’t know what is.
